Pocketpedia App Reviews

Bibliophile Bliss

It took awhile to arrive but the wait was entirely worthwhile. I have an unusually large library consisting of several thousand volumes which include reviews, synopses, and jacket images. The size of the Bookpedia application support folder on my MBP is 2.62GB, yet Pocketpedia 3 on my New iPad (third generation) opens from a cold start in seconds. Outstanding performance!

No iCloud sync?

Such a long wait and no iCloud sync??

Much desired

A great addition to the Pedia family that makes the other Pedias far more useful. Its far easier to make a selection from 600+ titles by using Pocketpedia3 on a iPad than to pour over shelf after shelf of discs or even than firing up your Mac. A must for Pedia users who own an iPad, the app works beautifully, and allows you to browse your collection comfortably, displaying almost all the detail stored on your Mac in an easy to access form. Id like a few more sort options (e.g. by genre or running time), but the app is too good the way it is to allow a nitpick to lower my rating.

A superb app

I am rearranging my CD collection right now, and having Pocketpedia handy is making my life infinitely easier. Synch with the Mac based Pedias worked flawlessly, the different sorting modes in PocketPedia are very helpful. It is well designed, fast, a joy to use.

Badly in need of help

Launching this program for the first time yields an almost completely blank screen, with only a "Collections" button and a "Doghouse Search" field at the top. Wheres the "Welcome to Pocketpedia! Heres how to get started..." greeting? What am I supposed to do here? Tapping Collections brought me to another nearly blank screen, but at least this one told me I had to sync with my Mac via Wi-Fi. (What, no iCloud?) After jumping through a bunch of hoops that included a $12 update to my copy of DVDpedia, I managed to make that work, but it was all guesswork on my part--no help from Bruji. This apps library search field is hidden unless I scroll the list of titles to the very top. When there are a lot of titles (as in my case), thats a major nuisance. In an app whose sole purpose is to let me find things in my collection, the search capability should NEVER be hidden! On the other hand, the "Doghouse search" field is always visible... but it brings up titles I dont own and never heard of. Theres no explanation of this (or indeed, of anything else) in the Pocketpedia app, and searching Brujis support website FAQ for doghouse yields no results. How is it that an (apparently) major feature is completely undocumented? I really wanted to love this app. Goodness knows weve all waited long enough for a way to sync our Pedia collections with our iOS devices. But Pocketpedia leaves the user to stumble through setup, offers no help or explanations, and makes its key function--library search--hard to get to much of the time. I look forward to seeing these problems addressed in an update, but I cant recommend the app in its present state.

It would be good if...

Well, I wouldve loved this app, except for the fact that I cant use it! I just bought an app that I cannot use, all because it didnt mention that I needed a higher version of Bookpedia to use this. I hope the next update will support older versions too.

Fi-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-inally!

It has been a long wait for this mobile app to come out, let me tell you! One that would work with my Mac app DVDPedia. I have nearly 2000 movie titles Im organizing! Of those titles, I have a web export list for movies sorted by: name, release year, and date added to my collection. In addition to that I have a documentaries list, an unwatched list (by each date and name), a list of titles "to" watch (each by name and date again), as well as a few other fun lists, (Christmas movies, Hawaiian movies, movies with soandso actor or by soandso director, etc.). This amounted to "SEVERAL" web exports but even more concerning was that in total it generated nearly 20,000 files. This took approximately 6 hours to load onto my FTP site so I could access it via Safari on my mobile devices, (no matter how big or small your data to upload is, the sheer number of files will choke an upload). It was quite a chore! I even went into the HTML code of the export templates and modified how the data was shown on the pages immensely. It was also quite a bit of work... Fi-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-inally, I no longer need to do any of that. The ability to edit and manage the database from the mobile devices will be nice when added, but frankly, I will take the app as it is now with a great big CHEER and easily give this a rating of FIVE STARS!!!

Better

This is getting there but I want to be able to scan my movies though my phone to add to my library. I would love to be able to scan a movie at a store to know if I have it already.

Wow! Awesome!

What a great app. Syncing a large database with hi-res artwork was fast and easy. App is super fast and nimble! Really, just a great job! Even without the wish list items below, this is a great app! Wish List: 1. iCloud Sync 2. Improved Search: Make the DogPedia search less prevalent, and the search my library more prevalent; allow control of which fields to search (all, title, director, actor, tag) 3. Improved Sorting: options for date 4. Ability to build a filter/search on the fly: blu ray, 3 stars or greater, Clint Eastwood, award winning

love it

If you have one of the desktop pedias, this is a must-have .. Read all my reviews on crosswa.lk ..

Okay, could be better...

I was impressed with Bookpedia’s Mac app, (see my review in the Mac App Store) and I was anxious to add the companion Pocketpedia iPhone app. I liked the idea of being able to sync my data to my phone and having all my info handy to refer to while on the go. I downloaded the iPhone app as soon as I had my Bookpedia data in order. Pros - - Syncing from my desktop to the iPhone was simple and without a hitch every time. - Important data from my desktop version was available to me on my phone, just as I expected. - Everything looked pretty much as good as it does on my computer, very cool. Cons - - Not all desktop features are available on the ‘portable’ version. - Navigation was sometimes tedious. When tapping on a library folder you view a book list. Tapping an individual book shows the data that you had entered for that particular book. It has a cover-art button and a detail button to view additional info for that book. To browse to the next or previous book in your list (in all views), you need to back out to your main list and tap the next book to view the information for that book. A ‘finger-swipe’ to move to the next or previous book in your collection, from any view, would feel more natural than going back and forth to the main list to select each book. Pocketpedia is not a bad app by any means, it is well designed, looks great, and intuitive to use. And it’s very convenient to have my book data handy when book shopping, essentially what I was looking for. But for the $4 price, I found it lacking some bang for the buck.

Just about worthless to me

The first five titles I tried came up with nothing. So, I spent $4.00 so I could keep track of 17% of my music. A way to manually enter CDs would be nice.

Definitely needs more work

Its easy to get all the basics up and running and create something that looks good at first glance. Its when you use it and start getting into details that this falls over. Syncing worked once for me, now its broken. If you just want to scroll through a library of many hundreds (in my case about 2,000) titles then that thin strip down the left hand side of my iPad to view everything in just doesnt cut it. Because the wonderful App Store forces me to buy without trying Im writing this review to help others. I would not purchase this until maybe another version or two has ironed out the bugs.

Almost excellent

I love this app because it allows me to track my library of over 4000 books. I frequently use it in bookstores to see if I already own the book Im looking at! It works great in conjunction with the desktop version. Im not sure how useful it would be without that. I would rate it as 5 stars if: It had iCloud sync and You could edit entries from the app. I like to include date purchased, price paid, and date read. For almost 9 months, developers have said that editing was coming. Please complete this task. Library needs to be expanded. Im not sure why books I find easily on Goodreads cannot be found here. I have been using this program for years so please continue to improve it. Bookpedia really is one of my favorite apps!

Mediocre app!

Have been using the desktop software for several years...very good app. However, this iPad app is mediocre at best. As another reviewer stated, it looks good at first site but after using it, especially with a sizable collection, youll quickly notice its mediocrity. It took 2 years after the first iPad was introduced to get this app and since then the company has only released very minor updates with most of those being bug fixes. You dont even have the ability to view your collection in grid form! How can something as necessary and elementary as that be overlooked with it being 2 years late to the game. Theres no ability to add movies or edit directly on the iPad (something that I was immediately able to do once I went with Collectorz). As a once-loyal customer, I got tired of the lack of updates and sub-par app and moved to a better competitor!

Completely Useless

What a waste of $4! Nowhere in the description did it say that this app ONLY works with Version 5 of the pedias. Im still using Version 4 pedias & this app cant even import the databases. Disappointed doesnt even begin to cover it.

Awesome software!

Always know what you own already - no more duplicate purchases of CDs or books (or DVDS or games). Help locate your media. Cant remember the author? you can keyword search. This software lets you carry your libraries on your phone and iPad, syncing with your laptop. Easily move things you donate to keep a record of gifts. Keep track of things to loan to friends - you can even send them email to nudge them to return something.

Still needs work

I really like the idea of this app but it has issues with syncing. When I add something on the iPhone or iPad and do a sync it will lose any cover art that was associated with the entry. The search via doghouse using the isbn or upc codes never finds an item but entering the name manually works many of those times. I have all of the pedia apps on the Mac and they are great and get much more information then this app can provide. They need to work on the search and sync issues to make this work the price.

Wonderful Addition to the Suite

I have three of the pedias and this syncs flawlessly with them. I wanted the ability to see collections on the go, and this does that in style. Adding to the collection on the go is easy with barcode scanning.

More sorting options needed

I use the desktop DVDpedia app and have grown to like its versatile sorting features. So when I saw Pocketpedia I thought it would be just as versatile. Pocketpedia syncs very well with DVDpedia but you can ONLY sort by movie title and director. In my case I would love the option to sort by Collection ID or just any other field populated by the desktop app. More sorting and customization options would make it very powerful. Also add more database search options other than Doghouse. It does not seem to difficult to add that ability next update.
